Day Spa VS Med Spa – How are they different?
Everyone craves a day at the spa! It’s a time to relax and focus on you! A spa day can offer stress relief and give you a boost in confidence too! But there are two types of spas – your traditional day spa and a medical spa. How are they different and what might you need to visit each one for?
Day Spa
Traditional day spas, that we are probably most familiar with, provide personal care treatments focusing on relaxation and improving beauty. Services you will most likely find at a day spa include massages, pedicures/manicures, and facials. Spas can differ greatly on what they offer – some may offer specialized massage services like hot stone therapy while others might even offer hair and makeup services. One thing all day spas do have in common however is that they are NOT under the supervision of a medical director. Treatments are rarely performed by medically trained professionals such as nurses or nurse practitioners. Some day spa providers may be specially trained in a specific area such as massage therapy or they may be a trained spa tech BUT they do not have a medical background.
Medical Spa
A medical spa is much different than a day spa in that a med spa MUST be under the supervision of a licensed medical expert. Gruene House Med Spa operates under the direct supervision of Dr. Z. Shah MD, our own resident board certified internal medicine physician. Because of Dr. Shah’s medical expertise we are able to offer medical grade treatments that are not able to be offered at traditional day spas. We are able to offer several medical treatments that correct a variety of conditions including lines and wrinkles, pigmentation issues, volume loss, and weight loss to name a few.
Med spas like Gruene House Med Spa are more about providing our clients with lasting improvements to the skin and body and less about just relaxation and pampering.
Some of Gruene House Med Spa’s medical treatments include:
- Botox and Juvederm to rid the face of lines and surface wrinkles
- Medical grade facials like Hydrafacial
- Chemical Peels that help to encourage a controlled shedding of the skin to accelerate the growth of new and youthful looking skin
- MicroNeedling to repair scars and hyperpigmentation
- Laser treatments that address a variety of concerns including wrinkles, loss of collagen, and discoloration
- CoolSculpting and CoolTone offer non-surgical body contouring
- Kybella to remove fat under the chin

It is important to remember the difference between medical spas and day spas — medical spas like Gruene House Med Spa require professional oversight since our treatments are incredibly powerful and offer long lasting results. You must only ever receive treatments of this nature when they are overseen by a licensed physician because the side effects can be detrimental when they are not performed by a skilled provider. Come in for a consultation at Gruene House Med Spa so we can help you meet your skincare and body goals in a safe and effective way.
